The author, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur was a renowned singer and teacher of Hindustani Classical Music. He was a direct student of the legendary classical singer Pandit Vishnu Digambara Paluskar and one of the first Indian singers to travel to Europe in 1933 to give a performance. After teaching Hindustani Classical Music in Lahore, he shifted to India, participated in the freedom struggle under Mahatma Gandhi and was instrumental in creating the College of Music at the Banaras Hindu University. He wrote several books on Indian music. He was awarded the Padmashri in 1955 and an honorary doctorate in 1964.
