Synopsis:
जे जगलो, जे भोगलं, अनुभवलं, पाहिलं, ते-ते तसंच लिहित गेलो. पुन्हा एकदा तेच जगणं जगत गेलो. कुणावर दोषारोप ठेवावा हा हेतू कधीच नव्हता. अनेकदा मोह होऊनही स्वत:ला सावरत गेलो. काही ठिकाणी काही व्यक्तींची नावे बदलली ती नाइलाज म्हणूनच. या पलीकडे माझ्या पदरचं काही नाही.
या पुस्तकानं भटक्या विमुक्त जाती-जमातींच्या प्रश्नावर सामाजिक मंथन सुरू झालं, भटक्यांचे प्रश्न सामाजिक चर्चेचा विषय झाला आणि त्यांच्यासाठी काम करणार्या मंडळींच्या कामाला चालना मिळाली तर पुस्तक लिहिण्याचे श्रम सार्थकी लागले असे मी समजीन. पिढ्यान्पिढ्या बिर्हाड पाठीवर घेऊन गाढवाचं जिणं जगणार्या मंडळींच्या वेदना समाज समजावून घेऊ शकला तरी खुप झालं.

Writer, social worker and coloumnist, Upara is the first work of author Laxman Mane. It is an autobiographical narrative of the author's life. The book won the presitigious Sahitya Akademi award for it's contribution to Dalit literature in India. A K Kamat, professor of French in Mumbai University, has also rendered Upara in French and the translation has been very well-received in France.
