बाळ सीताराम मढेकर (१९०९-१९५६) यांची कविता व सौंदर्यशास्त्र या दोन क्षेत्रात त्यांच्या प्रज्ञा-प्रतिभेची वैशिष्ट्ये विशेष प्रकर्षाने प्रकट झाली. मढेकरांच्या प्रतिमासृष्टीने मराठी कवितेत नवे युग सुरू केले. आधुनिकत्वाचाच एक रंग एका अंगाने या कवितेने प्रगट केला असला तरी ही संत भावनेची' कविता आहे. मढेकरांच्या काव्याचे वैशिष्ट्य जेवढे निराळ्या प्रतिमासृष्टीमुळे साकार झाले त्याहून अधिक मूलगामी पातळीवरून या परमेश्वरतृषेने-नियतीनियंतृत्वाने त्यांना आध्यात्मिक परंपरेशी बांधलेले आहे. त्यामुळे 'आधुनिक काळातील' या कवीचे जाणिवदृष्ट्या नाते पोचते ते संतांशी, केशवसुतप्रवर्तित सूर्यकुलाशी नव्हे... मढेकर वि.कृ. चिपळूणकरांच्या परंपरेतील आकृतिवादी सौंदर्यविचाराचे पुरस्कर्ते आहेत. मढेकरांच्या 'वाङ्मयीन महात्मते' मुळे मराठी साहित्यात एक उपकारक आत्मचिकित्सापर्व सुरु झाले असले तरी क्षीण अपवाद वजा जाता मराठी समीक्षेने मढेकरी कला साहित्यमीमांसा अंगिकारल्याचे दिसत नाही.
ह्या पुस्तिकेचे लेखक यशवन्त मनोहर (१९४३) हे मराठीतील सुप्रसिद्ध कवी आणि समीक्षक आहेत. कविता, समीक्षा, सम्पादित कृती अशी त्यांची विपुल साहित्यसंपदा प्रसिद्ध झालेली आहे.
